Don’t Fire Your Content Team — Arm Them With the Tools They Need

You might have heard about the recent layoffs at Mic following one unsuccessful pivot after another. The story is familiar in the modern digital media landscape, so I won't give another recap on how the mindless pursuit of digital trends ended up backfiring for another media company. Instead, I want to focus on solutions, namely, one solution that's been right under our nose for years.

We all know content is king. And we've learned the hard lesson that the written word is still important, making it imperative to keep content teams as strong as possible. But in an era of tightening budgets and endless pivots chasing endless trends, how can media companies both save money and give their content team the peace of mind to continue their work of delivering what readers want? Indeed, the solution is quite obvious if you think about it.

A Common Solution for a Common Problem

The answer was astutely given in a recent article by Jesse Knight, Vice's former CTO: Publishing companies need to move to a common publishing platform instead of relying on expensive, in-house solutions with massive legacy costs. He writes:

"It's as if every record label had their own dev team building their own version of iTunes or Spotify."

Why build and maintain your own CMS when there is a better solution? Indeed, it seems antiquated in retrospect. But if you're one of these companies that has already made such a commitment, it might seem impossible to take a right turn and strike out on a new path.

But there's always another way. And here at RebelMouse, we can help you make the transition to the best platform in the world.

Enter RebelMouse

What is RebelMouse? In short, RebelMouse is the solution Knight hinted at. As a centralized, massively scalable, proprietary CMS with the best social distribution tools in the industry, we have a proven track record of success. And as a centralized CMS, we are able to push updates instantaneously to all our clients. This is a tremendous advantage compared to traditional, decentralized CMS options like WordPress. It also makes us more secure.

Our publishing solution seamlessly adapts to every industry. We've helped launch some of the biggest new media companies to date — such as Axios and The Dodo — and have propelled brands like United Airlines, PAPER Magazine, and Dance Magazine to success in the digital and social space.

We are also the fastest enterprise-grade platform in the industry, with faster Google Lighthouse performance scores than our competitors. Site speed is critical to success in SEO. And when you combine this with our proprietary social distribution tools, organic traffic growth is all but guaranteed, especially when our average pages per visit across all of the sites we power is over five, meaning readers are spending significant amounts of time on RebelMouse sites. We also have proprietary SEO tools to help you grow your traffic from Google by optimizing your site structure and making it easy to give your posts the context Google needs for high rankings, as well as community and front end tools to drive loyalty and return visitors.

Take Success Into Your Own Hands

If all this sounds too good to be true, check out some of our success stories, including Mother.ly and Dance Magazine. One of our clients, the Italian newspaper La Verità, has seen tremendous growth using a paywall system combined with our proprietary technology that is specifically designed to engage readers and create loyalty. In August 2018, their return visitors increased by 74%, and new visitors increased by 115%. Using an infinite scroll design layout we call Social UX, La Verità is averaging 14 pages per visitor, far above the industry standard.

In short, RebelMouse is the answer media companies have been looking for. We are far from a cookie-cutter CMS that would limit your creative expression. Our Layout & Design tool offers near-infinite flexibility in design and our committed team of global developers can work with your tech team to develop solutions to almost any unique need.

We are constantly iterating to keep up with the latest updates from Facebook and Google, which is part of what makes our product the best in class. Our global team of experts is here for rapid response and we take security incredibly seriously. Since we do operate as a centralized CMS, all of our updates are deployed to every site in our network at once. Many times, our clients don't even know they're happening. Our coverage spans across time zones so your data is never vulnerable. And not only do we ensure every site we host is operating safely, but we make sure each is optimized for peak performance as well.

So, the only question left is: What are you waiting for?

How to Use Google Search Console’s Removals Tool

Quickly remove articles from search or see why a URL was pulled from search

Google recently released a new version of its Removals tool that temporarily blocks URLs from showing up in search results. The tool also shows which content is no longer being displayed due to either being outdated or because it was filtered out by SafeSearch, a Google feature that removes offensive content.

The new tool can be helpful if you want to quickly remove an article from showing up in search or to find information on why your content was removed from search by third-party requests.

How to Use Override Tags for Headlines + Subheadlines

Customize your preferences easily in our Layout & Design Tool

Site design should be agile, which means it's important to be able to make quick style changes that keep your content cohesive and organized. To make this even easier, there's now the ability to override the tags of your headlines and subheadlines for each article using our Layout & Design tool.

You can make these headline and subheadline changes using a Posts element. Here's a screencast of how this works:

s3.amazonaws.com

The Override default Headline Tag can be set to values <h1> through <h6>. The Override default Subheadline Tag can be set to values <h1> through <h6>, <p>, and <div>.

The new headline and subheadline overrides also work with AMP. If you have any questions about this new feature, email support@rebelmouse.com or contact your account manager today.

How to Enable Primary Tag Tracking in Google Analytics

Track your top-performing topics

On RebelMouse, we give you the ability to use as many tags as needed on every article to help keep you organized. But there's also an option to assign one primary tag to a post. A primary tag is built on the same principle as a primary section. One tag lets you assign higher importance to certain pieces of content when processing and organizing your posts.

There is also a primary tag dimension built into our RebelCMS which can be enabled for tracking in Google Analytics.

Why Track Primary Tags?

Tracking primary tags through Google Analytics allows you to track the performance of specific tags, which is helpful if you want to see what kinds of topics are performing well or underperforming on your site.

Once enabled in Google Analytics, you can see the performance of a specific primary tag, such as its pageviews, users, and more:

Then, in Google Data Studio, we can gather the data on your primary tags together to see your top-performing tags and gain insights into how they're performing.

How to Track Primary Tags in Google Analytics

To track your primary tags in Google Analytics, click on the Admin panel in your account. Then, select Custom Definitions.

Next, click Custom Dimensions.

After that, click on the red + New Custom Dimension button.

Fill in the name as Primary Tag, and set the Scope to Hit. Click the blue Create button.

That is all you need to do to set up tracking for your primary tags. Once completed, our team has to link a primary tag custom dimension on our back end. Please contact support@rebelmouse.com or datastudio@rebelmouse.com to finalize this step. Happy tracking!

No More Website Updates: Publish Like It’s the 2020s

These are the next-gen updates you need to stay ahead of the competition

Content creation is still the most powerful engine that propels every publisher forward. But in 2020 and beyond, quality content won't sustain a site on its own. The modern content lifecycle hinges on a number of things working together in unison — including page speed, intelligent SEO, and effective distribution, just to name a few.

However, there's one thing that can throw a wrench in the entire system, and that's platform updates. Whether you're publishing on a common CMS solution like WordPress, using a custom in-house CMS, have access to a dedicated team of developers, or any option in between, platform updates can be both costly and frustrating.
