Instagram Rolls Out In-Chat Payments
Meta owner Mark Zuckerburg announced a new feature that allows small businesses to talk directly to customers and complete purchases entirely within the platform’s chat functionality. The feature is available for qualified users who have set up business accounts on Instagram.
According to the announcement, users who take advantage of the in-chat payment functionality will be able to:
- Chat with customers in real time to answer questions and confirm purchase details.
- Create a payment request with item description and price.
- Request and collect payment.
“If you’re interested in a backpack, all you have to do is send a message to the business about the one you love. From there, you can chat about customizations — like adding your initials — and then place your order right in the chat. Buyers will use Meta Pay, previously known as Facebook Pay, to complete transactions. Zuckerberg says the recent rebrand brings the company one step closer to his vision of Meta Pay becoming a digital wallet in the metaverse that will let users securely manage their identities, what they own, and how they pay.
