Instagram Rolls Out In-Chat Payments

Instagram Rolls Out In-Chat Payments

Meta owner Mark Zuckerburg announced a new feature that allows small businesses to talk directly to customers and complete purchases entirely within the platform’s chat functionality. The feature is available for qualified users who have set up business accounts on Instagram.

According to the announcement, users who take advantage of the in-chat payment functionality will be able to:

  • Chat with customers in real time to answer questions and confirm purchase details.
  • Create a payment request with item description and price.
  • Request and collect payment.

“If you’re interested in a backpack, all you have to do is send a message to the business about the one you love. From there, you can chat about customizations — like adding your initials — and then place your order right in the chat. In that same chat thread, you’ll also be able to track your order and ask the business any follow-up questions.” — Meta announcement

Buyers will use Meta Pay, previously known as Facebook Pay, to complete transactions. Zuckerberg says the recent rebrand brings the company one step closer to his vision of Meta Pay becoming a digital wallet in the metaverse that will let users securely manage their identities, what they own, and how they pay.

Find New Ways to Diversify Your Site’s Revenue

The COVID-19 pandemic solidified the prominence of e-commerce as the top way to shop over visiting brick-and-mortar stores. In fact, it's estimated that 95% of purchases will be made online by 2040.

With platforms like Instagram making it even easier to shop without ever leaving the app, some publishers may wonder how they can capitalize on the hot online shopping market.

At RebelMouse, we offer several e-commerce solutions to help sites diversify revenue streams in a highly competitive market space. For example, instead of a traditional site that's full of banner ads and intrusive product suggestions, we offer functionality that mimics Instagram's shopping feature, which gives users more control over which products they browse while simplifying the purchase process.

Additionally, the flexibility of the open web means that there are user-friendly paths to securing e-commerce revenue without actually selling products of your own. One of the best ways to achieve this is through affiliate marketing. In the spring of 2020, Google let the world know that its Core Web Vitals would become the new benchmark for measuring a site's performance in its search results, known as the page experience update. Fast forward to more than a year later in August 2021 when, after much anticipation, Google's page experience update became official.

Since its rollout, developers have felt the impact of how their publishing platforms stack up against the new standard. Important decisions around the architecture of your site can now make or break your site's performance in the eyes of Google.

HTTP Archive, a tracking platform that crawls the web to identify trends and record historical patterns, frequently reports on how top content management systems (CMS) have weathered the page experience update through the creation of its Core Web Vitals Technology Report. RebelMouse has consistently outperformed major CMS platforms on Google's most critical metrics throughout the year:

Getting superior scores on Google's performance benchmarks isn't easy, either. The Ahrefs blog analyzed Core Web Vitals data from the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX), which is data from actual Chrome users, to see how the web stacks up against Core Web Vitals. Their study found that only 33% of sites on the web are passing Core Web Vitals.

data from Ahrefs tracked on a line chart finds that shows only 33% of sites on the web pass Google's Core Web VitalsFrom Ahrefs.
