How One Country Turned a Fan Following into a Monetization Powerhouse

Country isn't a zip code. Country is a state of mind. That's the core strategy behind One Country — a new media company dedicated to celebrating country music culture through not just music, but fashion, food, and lifestyle.

One Country was originally on WordPress before switching to RebelMouse. But after enjoying publishing on the RebelMouse platform for several years, their ownership changed and One Country's future became uncertain. Everyone — including RebelMouse founder Paul Berry, who served on One Country's advisory board at the time — knew One Country was a powerful asset with the potential to turn a loyal following into real revenue.

Project Requirements:

  • Create a CMS that empowers editors to easily create articles built for social growth
  • Convert social growth into page views
  • Quickly build a new media property with a nonintrusive ad strategy that is monetizable but still preserves One Country's voice
  • Empower a small team by filling in missing roles through mentorship
  • Provide One Country with the tools it needs to flourish as a new media company despite budget and resource constraints

Our Solution

RebelMouse + One Country entered into a revenue-sharing partnership, adding to our robust Site Network.

While a revshare agreement may sound like simply splitting ad revenue, it's actually a methodical partnership that's becoming the way new media operates in 2017. This relationship allows RebelMouse to provide lean tech to partners like One Country, freeing up their teams from heavy developer support, UX designers, and sometimes even a head of product.

More importantly, it means RebelMouse serves as One Country's compass in the ever-changing media landscape. Our team isn't just account managers and product support, but rather a fully functioning creative agency with experts in content, social, audience development, and monetization.

RebelMouse shepherds One Country's site roadmap and works with business development and sales teams to create premium ad strategies. Additionally, RebelMouse helps One Country not only create new revenue streams, but introduces new partnerships and advises on any potential promising — or maybe too risky — deals. Through these new ventures, we advise the sales staff on how to package new deliverables and sell them at scale without disrupting One Country's usability and core goals.

It's an "all hands on deck" effort that's blossomed into a game-changing relationship. Rebels wake up with the One Country team every day and look at their metrics — everything from social insights to ad conversions — and use that data to tweak their content for success. And it's working.

Contributors to Growth

One Country already had the right content and mindset for viral success, but with the help of our Site Network, they experienced 200% revenue growth this year.

These are some of the key factors that contributed to that growth:

  1. Authoring tools. The RebelMouse Particle Accelerator and built-in ad management tools, combined with RebelMouse's understanding of how Facebook Instant Articles work, enables One Country to maximize revenue across their site as well as Instant Articles, particularly on viral content.
  2. Thoughtful A/B testing. The RebelMouse platform allows for site layouts to be A/B tested, which means implementing and testing different ad formats to achieve the right balance of user experience and revenue. One Country's ad mix includes programmatic banners, native ads, and video units woven into our Social UX for Media layout.
  3. Creative agency partnership. RebelMouse worked with One Country to implement smart header bidding to generate more competitive ad CPM rates. Since implementing header bidding, One Country's on-site RPM has seen a 115% increase in just over two months.

Why Premium Creative Agencies and CTOs Choose to Develop on RebelMouse vs. WordPress and Drupal

The Intersection of Design and Development: Where Your Clients Thrive

We started RebelMouse seven years ago knowing that there was a fundamental design flaw in the world of traditional CMSs: Every instance, on every platform, had to be updated independently. It's similar to an era when users had to manage their own Microsoft Exchange Server for email. The costs of managing, maintaining, and iterating on a CMS to keep it awesome and world class is typically a $10 million-a-year endeavor. But even then, these cost-prohibitive CMSs are still behind the times.

Native Multivariate Testing at Scale With RebelMouse

What Differentiates Our Approach

There are many popular tools that allow you to perform experiments and A/B tests on your users — primarily Google Chrome Experiments and Optimizely. But all of these solutions are JavaScript additions to your web page that sidestep the problem of old, outdated, and clumsy CMSs. These solutions work by calling on a third-party JavaScript library that rewrites a page after it's rendered. This approach adds extra page weight and creates strange user experiences due to having to wait for everything to load and be rewritten on the fly.

At RebelMouse, we've solved this in a very elegant way. At the core level of our platform, we can natively render different layouts and track the exact differences in performance when comparing a test to your other layouts.

How to Monetize Your Website in Today’s Publishing Environment

In order to define distributive publishing, we have to ask the following question: If you have quality content, but nobody sees it, does it even exist? The answer is no, because your content needs to be supported in a way that lets it move seamlessly across all channels, especially site, search, and social. But let's take this question a step further: If you can't monetize your content to generate the support it needs, how do you create quality content in the first place?

At RebelMouse, we believe that every content team has unique needs. This is why our Entry Editor is easily customizable so that editorial teams can sculpt tools that function seamlessly for their specific workflow.

Within the Entry Editor is our Particle Assembler, which breaks down articles into micro pieces of content, what we call particles, that are dynamic and can be shared on their own or across social platforms. Since particles are designed to be repurposed, you can add a search function to your custom Entry Editor that will allow you to search for previously published particles and articles.

How Site Performance Shifted in 2020: RebelMouse Page Speed Updates

Google updated how it measures page performance during the pandemic. Here's how our product changed, too.

2020 was a year that shook every industry to its core. As workforces and workflows everywhere shifted, the digital publishing space was left to pick up the pieces of what it means to create content in a pandemic-filled world.

At RebelMouse, we examined the impact of COVID-19 on marketing strategies. You can read more about our findings here. However, as we round out a turbulent year, some publishers think 2020 will be a positive turning point for the industry overall. More people at home and being online has increased the need for quality content more than ever. Audiences are paying attention to where and how they consume content, and advertisers are taking notice of this pattern change, too.

Because of this, content deliverability is what will define what makes a successful publisher in 2020 and beyond. Audiences will only tolerate quality content, and they will only consume it on a site that provides a next-level site experience.
