Google Makes It Clear: Bard Is Not Part of Search

Google makes explicit distinction between its chatbot Bard and its traditional search product

Google is making it clear that its new AI-powered chat service, Bard, is not a search product. The announcement came during an all-hands meeting at Google where Jack Krawczyk, the product lead for Bard, said that Bard is an “experiment that’s a collaborative AI service,” according to CNBC.

Bard was first announced by Google in February 2023 after the search engine giant declared a “code red” situation over fears that the explosion of ChatGPT in December 2022 could disrupt the search industry. Bard is an experimental conversational AI service powered by the company's Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA). Like ChatGPT, it uses information from the web to provide fresh, accurate answers to questions.

Google’s distinction between Bard and its search product caused confusion in the industry because some SEO experts viewed Google's launch of Bard as a hurried attempt to overshadow Microsoft's introduction of the new Bing search engine integrated with ChatGPT the next day. Plus, Google CEO Sundar Pichai's blog post on Bard featured images of ChatGPT-like responses to search queries.

Google is currently testing Bard in search under the name "Search It," with the goal of improving query generation and user confidence. However, Krawczyk emphasized that Google already has a search product for those who want a more traditional search experience.
