AWS's Web Application Firewall (WAF) is a firewall that helps protect your web applications (or APIs) against common web exploits that may affect availability, compromise security, or consume excessive resources. AWS WAF gives RebelMouse developers control over how traffic reaches our applications by enabling us to create security rules that block common attack patterns, such as SQL injections or cross-site scripting (XSS), and rules that filter out specific traffic patterns we have defined. In the spring of 2020, Google let the world know that its Core Web Vitals would become the new benchmark for measuring a site's performance in its search results, known as the page experience update. Fast forward to more than a year later in August 2021 when, after much anticipation, Google's page experience update became official.
Since its rollout, developers have felt the impact of how their publishing platforms stack up against the new standard. Important decisions around the architecture of your site can now make or break your site's performance in the eyes of Google.
The good news is that performing well on Core Web Vitals is possible with thoughtful, strategic changes to your site’s codebase.

Understanding Core Web Vitals
First, it’s important to understand the metrics that make up Google’s Core Web Vitals:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): A website's LCP is the time it takes to load the main content on a page. Google wants LCP to happen within 2.5 seconds of when a page first starts loading.
- First Input Delay (FID): FID quantifies a user's experience when trying to interact with unresponsive pages. This usually occurs between First Meaningful Paint (FMP) and Time to Interactive (TTI) (more on what these two mean can be found below). You want your FID score to be low to prove the usability of your site. According to Google, pages should have an FID of less than 100 milliseconds.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): CLS determines how often your users experience unexpected layout shifts or changes on a page. To ensure visual stability, you want your CLS score to be low. Google wants pages to maintain a CLS score of less than 0.1.
The other existing search signals are:
- Mobile Friendliness: Follow Google's mobile-friendly guidelines to find out if your site meets its mobile experience standards.
- Safe Browsing: Google's Safe Browsing is a service where you can test your site's URLs for malware and suspicious activity.
- HTTPS Security: This determines if your site uses an HTTPS connection by default, which helps ensure site security.
- Intrusive Interstitial Guidelines: These guidelines determine if a site is mobile-friendly enough to appear in mobile search results. Note that any content that follows Google News’s content policies will be eligible to appear in Google News's Top Stories on mobile.
Together, all of these metrics determine Google's new page experience signals.
Google says it will always consider informative, quality content as its number one search signal. However, if two websites both have quality content, but one site has better Core Web Vitals, the site with a better page experience will always outrank any site that isn’t optimized for performance.

How to Measure Your Site’s Page Speed

But there are multiple ways of testing your speed and vitals, and it can get very confusing to try and understand the results since different measuring tools can result in different scores.

Make sure your audience never misses an update
Many organizations are facing communication challenges after the recent outbreak of COVID-19. With so much information available everywhere, it is harder than ever to control the message of your own audience.
At RebelMouse, we're constantly iterating on our platform to help you make your content as relevant as possible. In the current news environment, staying on top of breaking stories using live blogs is incredibly important.
We've implemented our own version of the live-blog experience that's designed to maximize your potential on search. We power this new functionality using WebSockets, which allows for near-instant updates.
Here's an example of what this could look like for you when implemented:
How It Works
The functionality of our live blog is built around Sections. To start, you need to designate a section as a "live" section. In order to make a section a live section, use the "Live Section Update" element in our Layout & Design tool and add it to a section conditional like this:
Now when you add posts to that section, they'll be part of the live-blog experience. Adding a new post to your live blog is as simple as creating a normal post and then adding it to the section you just set up as live. In the following example, we've created a designated "Live Blog" section to store our live posts.
Once you click Publish, RebelMouse uses WebSockets to near-instantly push the post to the top of your live section. This allows you to publish posts quickly as you stay on top of breaking news.
You can make this process even smoother for editors by instructing them to drag the blue "+" icon — to add posts — into their bookmarks bar as a bookmarklet. This way if they need to make an update to the live blog, they can click the bookmarklet, select the correct live section, and publish their post as they normally would.
Post Live Updates With RebelMouse's Assembler
You can also post live updates with RebelMouse's Assembler functionality without leaving the Entry Editor. Once you create an Assembler in your live post, you will see the ability to publish each particle as a live update.
When you are ready to publish a new particle as a live update, click the PUBLISH button in the right corner:
After you have clicked PUBLISH, the Entry Editor will refresh. You will see a new particle at the top of your Assembler for the next update. The particle you just published will have a new time stamp:
Each particle you add to your live post will have a time stamp of when it was published to let the reader know the timeline of your story and the most recent information. These time stamps will be reflected in the live post on your site. Your particle headlines and time of publish will be featured as clickable links on a side bar of your post.

Google’s page experience signals will officially roll out as a search-ranking factor for desktop in February 2022. The launch marks the culmination of a journey that began in May 2020 when Google first let the world know that its Core Web Vitals would become the new benchmark for measuring a site's performance in its search results. Six months later, Google announced that its page experience signals for mobile would officially roll out and begin impacting search rankings in May 2021. The final rollout wasn't completed until August 2021.
According to Google’s desktop announcement, the same three Core Web Vitals metrics — LCP, FID, and CLS — and their associated thresholds will apply to desktop ranking. The other page experience signals, including HTTPS compliance, will remain the same. The mobile-friendliness signal will not be a ranking for desktop as expected. Here’s a chart of which metrics are included in the desktop update versus the existing mobile implementation of page experience signals:
Additionally, Google says when a site has separate desktop and mobile URLs with the correct configurations, the desktop signal is based on the URLs that desktop users see.
The desktop update is expected to be completed by March 2022. Site owners will be able to get a feel for how their desktop pages are performing through Google Search Console before the rollout begins.
