Understand what Lighthouse 6.0 and Core Web Vitals mean for your website's future
Since Google's page speed changes in 2018, publishers have engaged in a mad dash to figure out how to build dynamic sites and maintain performance scores that meet the search engine's user experience expectations. In 2020, when people are online more than ever, excellent site performance is no longer optional.
Last year, Google released version 6.0 of Lighthouse. As a reminder, Lighthouse is a tool built into the latest version of Google Chrome that helps you determine how well your site is performing, and tells you which pages on your site need improvement. So let's look at what's changed.
First off, and most importantly, Lighthouse has added two new metrics into its formula for page speed:

As you can tell, First Contentful Paint (FCP) has gained a bit more weight in Lighthouse 6.0. FCP measures the time from click to the time when a user's browser renders the first bit of content from the Document Object Model (DOM), which is your site's HTML structure.
By contrast, two metrics dropped considerable weight in the formula. The first is Time to Interactive (TTI), which measures the time from when the page starts loading to when its main subresources have loaded and it's capable of reliably responding to user input quickly. You want your site to have a low TTI to maintain its usability. Second is Speed Index (SI), the measurement of how quickly the contents of a page are populated. Both dropped in Lighthouse's speed calculation by 12–18%.
These new metrics haven't changed Lighthouse's primary function — to determine if your website loads as quickly as possible. The new insights are just a new way to measure this more accurately. LCP measures load time, and TBT determines how long a page remains inactive for a user, two data points that have the potential to diminish the overall user experience if not optimized correctly.
Here's another way to visualize these changes:
Shortly after the launch of Lighthouse 6.0, Google announced an update to the way it evaluates overall page experience. This change is measured by three metrics called Core Web Vitals, that can be tracked and evaluated specifically using Google Search Console. Core Web Vitals now play an important role in how Google measures overall page performance, and could be a make-or-break factor for your site's survival.
Google says 2020's Core Web Vitals consists of the following data points:
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): A website's LCP is the time it takes to load the main content on a page. Google wants LCP to happen within 2.5 seconds of when a page first starts loading.
First Input Delay (FID): This metric quantifies a user's experience when trying to interact with unresponsive pages. This usually occurs between First Meaningful Paint (FMP) and TTI. You want your FID score to be low to prove the usability of your site. According to Google, pages should haven an FID of less than 100 milliseconds.
Cumulative Layout Shift Score (CLS): CLS determines how often your users experience unexpected layout shifts or changes on a page. To ensure visual stability, you want your CLS score to be low. Google wants pages to maintain a CLS score of less than 0.1.
These three metrics will work alongside Google's other ranking factors, including a site's mobile friendliness and safety features, to determine its overall page experience and visibility on search.
Google says it will always consider informative, quality content as its number one search signal. However, if two websites both have quality content, but one site has better Core Web Vitals, the site with a better page experience will always outrank any site that isn't optimized for performance.

For example, Facebook has declared full-screen ad pop-ups to be an obtrusive user interface, and is heavily penalizing sites for it. However, that's very often the most premium and desperately needed source of revenue for a media site. Creators can add annotations to drafts at any time during the editorial process. Within the platform, there's a companion notifications-and-comments feed for writers and editors to review annotations, as well as a timeline that tracks edits.
Add Annotations: If you're reviewing a post in the Entry Editor, you can add annotations to any part of the content for the author to see.
Receive Notifications: There's an alert icon that appears in the top-right corner of the Entry Editor each time there's a new annotation or comment added to the post.
Comment Thread: Keep the communication open with a thread of all comments and annotations that've been left on a post.
The dashboard is where content creators, administrators, and contributors can see the current queue of posts and where each article stands in the content lifecycle. Based on a users' rights, they can also look at real-time stats to keep track of trends and any potential peaks or dips in traffic.

Never wonder where a post stands. Every phase of the workflow is clearly marked in the dashboard. If an article is still in review, it's marked with a yellow bar across the top of the draft.

Within the dashboard, users can see the latest pieces of content in the queue, their status, and when they were created. Preview, edit, or search for any article right from within the dashboard.

Google updated how their PageSpeed Insights scores are calculated by releasing a new version of Lighthouse on June 1, 2021. Lighthouse is a tool built into Google Chrome that lets you know how well your site is performing against Google's standards for a better open web. At RebelMouse, our team keeps up with updates from Google closely, and reads all of their release notes and GitHub updates.
It's important to note that Chrome User Experience Report (CRUX) scores and Lighthouse scores are not entirely aligned and often disagree with each other. Please follow best practices on our platform, as described here, to stay ahead of Google's algorithm changes.

Tweets are a very popular embed for media sites. They can contain lots of information and drive lots of traffic, and we have worked very hard to make it super easy for writers and editors to embed them by simply dropping a link into our Add Media Bar.
But tweets are not all the same size, and because of the way Twitter has coded them, they dynamically change their height as their elements come through, i.e., a photo, video, or screenshot can all change the size. These size changes cause penalties for cumulative layout shift (CLS), one of Google's Core Web Vitals.
We are always introducing new updates to our platform, and we've recently rolled out a platform-wide update that optimizes tweets to dynamically set the height of the tweet embed. To solve this, we do a server-side call when a user embeds the tweet to find the exact height and set it in the embed code. So this new behavior will work for all tweets that get embedded using the URL upload technique described in this post. This update will affect new tweets embedded and moving forward, but not backwards to everything that you've embedded previously.
Amazon has recently begun adding editorial content to the search results on their site. This is a part of their Onsite Associates Program (OSP), which is an extension of their Amazon Associates (affiliate) program.
This is a really cool way for Amazon to pull in third-party content that discusses a particular product type to enhance listings, and it's a great way to give users detailed information about products that is divorced from the actual seller of the product. We've recently updated our RSS Feed structure so that you can easily send your content to Amazon to take advantage of this program.
Editorial recommendations are pieces of content from websites that are syndicating content to Amazon to give people searching for products detailed editorial information about specific products. You've probably already seen these in action if you do much shopping through Amazon.
When you search for a particular product type, as you scroll down through Amazon's results page, you'll often see something like this:
In this example, The Angle has written an article on the best baseball gloves, and has been approved to submit its content to Amazon. Because of the keywords in use, Amazon is then able to select the appropriate editorial content to add to a user's product search. The results will also rotate, so some users may see this content, and some may see other content.
To be featured in Amazon's editorial recommendations you have to submit your site to Amazon for approval, and then have an RSS Feed that meets their requirements. The submission process for approval is based on an invitation from Amazon. If you have an Amazon account representative, you can reach out to them to discuss whether or not you're eligible to receive an invitation.
Amazon has certain required fields for submitting editorial content to be featured. We are able to customize your Entry Editor to be sure that all required fields are included, and are marked as required before publication. This ensures that when the content gets to Amazon, it's got all of the required information in place. The additional required fields are pulled into the RSS Feed automatically and/or are hard coded.
You can see in the following screenshot that we can set up your hamburger menu (☰) to be able to select a specific Entry Editor layout for creating OSP posts:
This version of Entry Editor will make sure that the post you create will have the required elements. You can see that the requirements are marked with an asterisk:
In addition, if you attempt to publish a post without the required fields being entered, you will receive a warning prompting you to complete the fields (title, and one e-commerce particle that includes a headline, body text, and purchase URL):
This process ensures that the posts being sent to OSP will have the specified fields required by Amazon. Additionally, we make sure that the posts will automatically be assigned to the appropriate section on your site that's dedicated to OSP, so that they don't publish to your home page or other section pages (unless you want them to!).
We also are able to create custom RSS Feeds, and have built a specific feed for Amazon, so that not only does your content contain the required information, but it's also automatically formatted to their feed requirements.
Please note that the overall setup will require approximately three billable services hours from our development team to implement, and to properly train your team on how to use this feature. In addition, we will need the following information from you:
As mentioned above, Amazon requires certain fields to be in the RSS Feed. Here is a list of those required elements and how RebelMouse handles them:
By getting your content into Amazon's editorial recommendation system, you'll not only be able to promote your brand, but you'll also be able to reap some revenue benefits. It works very similarly to how affiliate links currently work. If an Amazon user goes through your content and purchases from the product link in your content, you can receive a small commission.
Of course there are some minor drawbacks as well, such as you are not currently able to add any links back to your site from the editorial content. Additionally, as of now, the products in your articles need to be structured specifically from best to worst in ranking. This can be accomplished by putting your highest-ranking (best) product in the first particle, and then adding products sequentially thereafter according to rank.

We will describe the features included in this report in detail, but briefly, Page Experience report provides a general overview of the user experience on your site.

From this view you can access detailed information about where your site is winning, and where it needs improvement. But what is being measured? Let's look deeper.

What you see here is a bar graph showing the percentage of URLs on your site that are passing, or have a good page experience. The line graph overlaid is showing the number of impressions that those URLs have over time.
The next part of the report breaks down different categories of metrics related to page performance. Let's look more closely at them.
Core Web Vitals measure the speed and stability of individual pages. This includes data such as Cumulative Layout Shift, First Contentful Paint, and more. In order for a page to be considered a good experience, all vitals must be within the green range of Google's measurement spectrum. You can click through from the report to see your full results for Core Web Vitals, and also drill down to individual articles that have issues:
The Mobile Usability report provides details on whether there are any usability problems for a given URL. In order to pass, a page must have no usability problems. Again, you can click through to a detailed breakdown of any usability issues:
This is perhaps the strictest part of the report. If any security issues are found on the site, it automatically disqualifies all URLs from being considered a good page experience. If you click through and find security issues, they should be fixed as quickly as possible.
Your site must be served over HTTPS to be considered a good page experience. If you have too many HTTP URLs, the report will simply flag that you do not pass for a good page experience. There currently is not a breakdown of HTTPS vs. HTTP URLs on a site.
Ad Experience is an overall measure of your site, and whether the ad experience for the user is distracting, interrupting, or just not a good experience. The ad experience ranking is not reflected specifically in the Page Experience report, but if it's determined that your site has a bad ad experience, all of your URLs will fail this report.
As Google rolls out its new algorithm updates, the Page Experience is going to have a significant impact on your search rankings. By being vigilant with your site, you will only improve your chances of winning at search. Google's tools, in combination with their algorithm updates, allow you to not only keep an eye on what's working and not, but also to pinpoint actionable items to improve.
