Stateless services, such as application services for front end and back end tasks, are deployed within an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) into multiple availability zones using Amazon Auto Scaling groups. Every service deployment is automated and can be done without an operator. Auto Scaling groups eliminate the need for manual recovery procedures in the event of hardware-related incidents. Additionally, Auto Scaling groups for stateless services provide the ability to balance resources according to current load.
Stateless services include:
- Front end and back end applications
- Background workers
- Dedicated services for paid content and statistics
All interactions with our internal services are done via Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB). Load balancing allow us to control the flow of all incoming traffic and reroute it to the group of instances that are available as necessary, which covers any networking and hardware issues. Every load balancer controls the health of the listener instance by regularly performing health checks and removing failed instances from production environments.
Load balancing and Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances provide monitoring services with resource consumption data. Stateful services such as MongoDB, Redis, and Memcached are deployed within a VPC into multiple availability zones using Auto Scaling groups. Every data service has backup, recovery, and automatic failover procedures. Backup and recovery procedures are integrated into Auto Scaling groups and tested regularly.
Services performance is monitored by internal and external tools:
- Sentry is used to track errors.
- New Relic is used for application performance monitoring.
- Amazon CloudWatch is used to monitor performance extremes.
- Monit, Nagios, and Cacti are used to monitor metrics per instance.
Defense in Depth (DiD) standards are adhered to and applied at all levels:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS), such as Identity and Access Management (IAM) and CloudTrail
- VPC and subnets
- Load balancers (security groups)
- EC2 instances
- Operating systems use permissions-based controls
- AWS CloudTrail monitors all activities in our production data centers and grants us the ability to perform audits
- Secured storage
- Encrypted transition protocols

Google’s page experience signals will officially roll out as a search-ranking factor for desktop in February 2022. The launch marks the culmination of a journey that began in May 2020 when Google first let the world know that its Core Web Vitals would become the new benchmark for measuring a site's performance in its search results. Six months later, Google announced that its page experience signals for mobile would officially roll out and begin impacting search rankings in May 2021. The final rollout wasn't completed until August 2021.
According to Google’s desktop announcement, the same three Core Web Vitals metrics — LCP, FID, and CLS, — and their associated thresholds will apply to desktop ranking. The other page experience signals, including HTTPS compliance, will remain the same. The mobile-friendliness signal will not be a ranking for desktop as expected. Additionally, Google says when a site has separate desktop and mobile URLs with the correct configurations, the desktop signal is based on the URLs that desktop users see.
The desktop update is expected to be completed by March 2022. Site owners will be able to get a feel for how their desktop pages are performing through Google Search Console before the rollout begins.

Do you ever wonder if a few typos can impact your site’s search performance? According to Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller, it takes more than just a few grammatical missteps for Google’s crawler to determine your site’s quality.
During a New Year’s Eve Office Hours hangout, Mueller said that if certain portions of a website are deemed low quality, it can negatively impact the site’s search ranking overall. A good example of this is a site that has different language versions within the same domain. If the site has a French-language version that is made up of quality content, but the English translation isn’t up to the same standard, the ranking of the French version of the site could be negatively impacted.
“If you have a very low-quality translation that's also indexed and that's also very visible in search, then that can definitely pull down the good quality translation as well or the good quality original content that you also have,” Mueller said.

Even if your site isn’t translated into multiple languages, the example above serves as a useful illustration of how it only takes one page of low-quality content to negatively impact your site’s entire search ranking. This means that it’s more important to make sure your overall site is delivering quality content up to Google’s standards, rather than stressing about where exactly all those typos and grammatical errors are living on your site.
According to Mueller, site quality is “usually not something where they’re individual things that we could just point at and say, ‘Oh, if you have five misspellings on a page, that’s a sign of low quality.’ These things happen individually. All of these factors individually are hard to say that they are a sign of something being low quality, but rather we have to take everything together and figure out what the mix is together.”

Since Google measures quality at the site level, it can take a while for Google to index a new content update. So if you’re working to improve the content on your site, don’t get discouraged if it takes longer for Google to register the improvements.
