RebelMouse vs. WordPress VIP

After building the product for Huffington Post, and owning the product and engineering groups at AOL after we were acquired, it was clear to me there was a huge gap between what the current CMS offering gave the world and what the world needed. Five years later we are at scale, moving the needle and doing to WordPress what Airbnb did to Craigslist.

Building Relationships to Build a Better Future

It's far too easy to get lost in a medley of metrics when you work in digital media. We're guilty of it here too. We harp on client success stories, software updates, audience reach, revenue, and each and every Facebook algorithm update that comes our way all the time.

But there's one thing that really makes us tick here at RebelMouse: The relationships we build with our clients. We pride ourselves on working with brilliant minds as we collectively build a better future through media. We are very open + vocal about our ethics and beliefs here. We fire clients whose morals contradict ours, and hire those whose we support. It's part of what makes it easy to get up and work toward a better future each morning.

This post is dedicated to our beautiful clients, and the love we have for each other. To hear a client sing praise about their appreciation for a Rebel team member gives us just as many goosebumps as seeing an entirely green Google Analytics home page. So here are a few stories that gave us all the feels this week at RebelMouse:

How One Country Turned a Fan Following into a Monetization Powerhouse

Country isn't a zip code. Country is a state of mind. That's the core strategy behind One Country — a new media company dedicated to celebrating country music culture through not just music, but fashion, food, and lifestyle.

One Country was originally on WordPress before switching to RebelMouse. But after enjoying publishing on the RebelMouse platform for several years, their ownership changed and One Country's future became uncertain. Everyone — including RebelMouse founder Paul Berry, who served on One Country's advisory board at the time — knew One Country was a powerful asset with the potential to turn a loyal following into real revenue.

Your Website Roadmap Is Outdated: Why You Need the RebelMouse Compass

Technology continues to accelerate the way we consume + interact with media. And while media companies are looking for a way to keep up with the times, they're following a roadmap that ultimately leads them nowhere. They're caught in a hamster wheel chasing these ever-changing trends.

What works within the social sphere changes constantly, not to mention fast. We've seen it with the recent big push to video, mobile's domination, paid subscription models, etc. But trends are fickle, and with the constant algorithm updates, platforms steal most of the spotlight — taking focus away from vital audience building and monetization on sites.

RebelMouse was built in the age of social, so we are well equipped to handle these disruptions. Our clients are seeing crazy results amidst the changing social landscape because we've mastered the right mix of strategy + tech to propel them into the future.

Why We're Immune to Facebook's Pendulum

Our obsession over methodical traffic and how/why things go viral has allowed our clients to see a constant increase in reach on Facebook. Within the past five months, many publishers have been experiencing another decline in Facebook reach. In fact, reach is down as much as 42% so far this year. It's a trend that persists despite the rise of content championing polarizing stories and social-friendly videos. At RebelMouse, our clients continue to see their Facebook reach increase. We look at changes in the media landscape and platform updates as a challenge and an opportunity.

Azula Sees 398% Facebook Growth in Switch to RebelMouse

At the end of August 2017, Azula switched to RebelMouse, leaving WordPress in their rear-view mirror. Since then, traffic to their site from Facebook has risen 398%.

Wait, what? How can that be? Aren't publishers supposed to be seeing decreases in traffic from the big blue social media machine? Well, in short, a lot of them are. But it's not because Facebook decided to hurt them or tweak publishers into giving them more money. It's because publishers haven't been able to adapt to platform changes fast enough to avoid the natural traffic penalty of falling behind the times.

United Hurricane Relief Campaign

Background

United Airlines has worked with their customers, employees, and MileagePlus members to launch a CrowdRise fundraising campaign which has already raised a total of more than $2.8 million to support their humanitarian aid and disaster relief partners: Airlink, the American Red Cross, Americares, Operation USA, the Greater Houston Community Foundation, and the Humane Society International. United has also partnered with Chase card services to provide additional bonus miles to members who donate to those organizations, and has agreed to match the $300,000 in relief already raised for both Hurricane Harvey and Irma. So far, United has committed over seven million bonus miles to their customers who have made donations.

RebelMouse powers United's content hub. Together, we were able to quickly make changes and integrations that highlighted and amplified United's efforts. Our creative agency was able to do the design and coding, as well as work with the (fabulous) CrowdRise team to bring the integration together in a matter of hours.

RebelMouse also worked to create a mobile and accessibility compliant data view of the impact on flights from the hurricanes.

Summer 2017: 5 Social Trends of the Season

Platforms, users + publishers have a need for speed.

The world of digital has gotten so much more complex. As social bleeds into sites and vice versa, the ecosystem between digital and real life has become even more intertwined. It's even impacting elections.

If there had to be one word to summarize this summer on social it would be speed. Platforms are getting better about delivering content in non-intrusive formats that load before you can blink. Websites are also following the trend of usability and personal experience more than ever. Gossip sites that once delivered articles oversaturated with ads now publish on Instant Articles.

What's Next After Facebook

It's always hard to imagine what is next until suddenly it's dramatically obvious.

It is now completely clear. The first phase of the internet confused freedom of speech with code of conduct. Platforms built through the hard work of good people are being used to spread hate across the world at rates we have never seen before. The largest platforms in the world are now completely toxic. And in our decades of enduring this, the toxicity has become normalized. What women endure online — as an important example — is worth sobbing over (and I honestly hope you do).

4 Signs You Should Re-Platform Your Site

Content management systems (CMS) are kind of like the War and Peace of tech. It's a lot of intricate coding, design, and insider baseball that can be tough to fully grasp in one sitting.

If you're a new media company or brand that's just starting out and trying to find a publishing solution that will enhance your day-to-day — rather than slow down the creative — it can be tough to figure out which will give you the least heartache during the launch process. If you already have a CMS in place, then there's probably a greater chance that the platform you're currently using is leaving you frustrated. But even if you've grown weary from your everyday tools, it still can seem even more daunting to re-platform your site entirely.

Media Companies: Don’t Let Your Traffic Run out the Side Door

The launch of Facebook's Instant Articles left media companies with two choices: (a) integrate deeply with Facebook — fast load times! better experience! — or (b) skip this opportunity and risk falling further behind in the traffic race driven from Facebook. Given that Facebook has become such a huge traffic driver to so many media sites, in reality there's no choice to make. Yet while Facebook and, of course, Google drive significant traffic volume, that traffic is not always the best. It's often to one page only, and for very short sessions (especially on mobile). It doesn't have to be this way.

Every Keyword = New Target Audiences

We're kind of obsessed with social integration + making sure your content travels across platforms seamlessly. So we've added a couple more tools to your distribution arsenal, each designed to enhance reach capabilities even further. Now you can find influencers and target audiences faster with every publish to really set up your stories for success. Here's the lowdown:

  1. Easily add tags inside a user profile. This will allow you to more easily tag and categorize other pages that you collaborate with frequently. With the upgrade, you can do it swiftly by clicking on a suggested target's profile card.
  2. Add tags in the sections and categorization tab. ← The cool thing about this feature is that if a tag is associated with a profile in the "Discovery" section of the platform, it will show that profile as a suggested target. So, for example, if your post is related to "swimming" and you tag it as such, any partners that you have associated with the tag "swimming" in Discovery will appear as suggested targets.

These tools are designed to eliminate the laborious work that goes into finding relevant targets for each story. Every tag equals a new target audience, so make sure to utilize this new feature to uncover a whole new world of influencer potential!

It was also during that conference when Twitter officials announced that they planned to make the switch to AMP for their native app. Now that the rollout is underway, publishers are already experiencing the boost.

Why RebelMouse Is so Fast

Fast-loading sites are now a bipartisan issue. It's a debate that may have once been considered insider baseball, but is now a widespread user preference. The topic of a fast-loading internet has always come down to reader experience, but with the spread of social, the reader now has more of a say — and is a higher priority — than ever before.

Just this month Facebook announced it will start prioritizing faster-loading pages, which could prompt even more publishers to focus on Instant Articles. Google also recommends keeping page speed down to under three seconds.

Users are just as smart as the industry insiders now, and that means it's important to give them as swift and efficient an experience with your content as possible. If not, they will find it elsewhere.

RebelMouse is a CMS that fuels crazy-fast content, so you'll never have to worry about speed impacting your content's distribution. There are a lot of factors that go into why we're so fast. Here are just some of them:

The Strategy Behind Facebook Instant Articles Monetization

We see clients make $$ every day.

We're in a very lucky position at RebelMouse because normally you get to only see your own data. We're able to see what's happening across a huge set of web properties with different audiences, missions, strategies, and teams all over the world. We share our learnings in strategy sessions with clients where we brainstorm on how to make this information and these trends applicable to their business.

There is a lot of noise going around about Facebook Instant Articles not performing well. But what we're actually seeing is quite beautiful in many cases. We have clients experiencing up to $25 CPM — and even $35 — on Instant Articles now. They're achieving those numbers not through a sales team, but rather with effective content on sites that are perfectly optimized for social — and this absolutely includes a seamless Instant Articles configuration. Across the board, we're seeing sites hold a healthy $5 CPM a day, and some even regularly come in at $10.

Meet the RebelMouse Particle Accelerator

The core unit of content on the web used to be the article. Whether you called it a post, blog, article, or column, it's always been your core content. You created it and measured its performance. It's what fueled you to go viral.

Social has completely changed that paradigm.

Now, the core unit is much smaller. It's a Facebook video, an Instagram post, a tweet, a YouTube video, an interactive element, or even just an image. The core unit is now a particle. A particle is — quite literally — part of an article.
