Duplicate post filtering per module: to repeat or not to repeat content?

You're browsing through your site's homepage, you're just checking all the modules you've sent up and suddenly you notice one of them is half empty.

You think "it's supposed to have 6 posts, not 3!"

Well fear not, there's nothing broken or malfunctioning -- it's our duplicate filtering system.

We have this system in place to avoid repeating the same articles incessantly across the site. Some very annoying examples:

See how dupes keep overflowing all the different post modules?

This is the main reason why RebelMouse chooses to enable all duplicate filtering as default.

But worry not! We still can solve your 6 post module missing 3 whole articles.

Let's say you want a module in your sidebar to display duplicate posts anyway, because otherwise it always looks too empty.

Click on the left nav > Layout & Design tool:

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Fmedia.forumbee.com%2Fi%2Fcd5016e8-3d00-4a69-a636-77f792769858%2F547.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Fs3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com&s=1013&h=d892a1b2905cadac88a6530014c304fc39a3fc5096e49c8267a9e91cd6358435&size=980x&c=3182793697 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Fmedia.forumbee.com%252Fi%252Fcd5016e8-3d00-4a69-a636-77f792769858%252F547.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fs3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com%26s%3D1013%26h%3Dd892a1b2905cadac88a6530014c304fc39a3fc5096e49c8267a9e91cd6358435%26size%3D980x%26c%3D3182793697%22%7D" caption="" pin_description="" image-library="0" expand=1 photo_credit=""]

Go to the Post element you want to allow duplicates in, in our example the Side Bar, and scroll all the way down to advanced options in the Properties card.

In the Advanced Options you'll find a checkbox to allow duplicates:

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Fmedia.forumbee.com%2Fi%2F39b9aeb7-b396-4b3f-9098-319bdea5c6a4%2F547.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Fs3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com&s=986&h=f624a5e26e5e908dc82b188790fe160809fad9b84dd0882d3c0f5a5bf1b7c962&size=980x&c=2732520476 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Fmedia.forumbee.com%252Fi%252F39b9aeb7-b396-4b3f-9098-319bdea5c6a4%252F547.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fs3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com%26s%3D986%26h%3Df624a5e26e5e908dc82b188790fe160809fad9b84dd0882d3c0f5a5bf1b7c962%26size%3D980x%26c%3D2732520476%22%7D" caption="" pin_description="" image-library="0" expand=1 photo_credit=""]

And now that it allows dupes, it will show posts regardless if they are repeated in the homepage or not:

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Fmedia.forumbee.com%2Fi%2F15c99c04-dbbe-4a17-97e0-e252fa7fd666%2F547.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Fs3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com&s=531&h=f92abfcb15f5ac1ebc2b82f9255f89094051915a925701088106248fa75739d1&size=980x&c=4103075077 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Fmedia.forumbee.com%252Fi%252F15c99c04-dbbe-4a17-97e0-e252fa7fd666%252F547.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fs3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com%26s%3D531%26h%3Df92abfcb15f5ac1ebc2b82f9255f89094051915a925701088106248fa75739d1%26size%3D980x%26c%3D4103075077%22%7D" caption="" pin_description="" image-library="0" expand=1 photo_credit=""]

This can be done on any particular Post element you want, and you can easily activate duplicate filtering again by unchecking the box.

An Important Note on Site Quality From Google’s Search Expert

Do you ever wonder if a few typos can impact your site’s search performance? According to Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller, it takes more than just a few grammatical missteps for Google’s crawler to determine your site’s quality.

During a New Year’s Eve Office Hours hangout, Mueller said that if certain portions of a website are deemed low quality, it can negatively impact the site’s search ranking overall. A good example of this is a site that has different language versions within the same domain. If the site has a French-language version that is made up of quality content, but the English translation isn’t up to the same standard, the ranking of the French version of the site could be negatively impacted.
