When the founders broke ground on Steamboat Ski Resort in 1957, many thought they were crazy for trying to build a ski area with only a little bit of money and very little equipment. But it worked. It was originally called Storm Mountain and the ranchers who became the resort's founders would often trek up the mountain and ski down, exploring the "champagne powder" that Steamboat would later be known for. Today, it's one of the most-visited in the state and is known as the friendliest. #9neighborhoods #ski #ride #friendly #snow
Vail is 3rd largest single-mountain ski resort in the U.S. Only Big Sky and Park City are larger. The ski resort opened in 1962 at the base of Vail Pass and the town of Vail was built around it. When the resort opened, six months after construction began, it already had two lifts and a gondola. Vail Resorts also owns Breckenridge, Keystone and Beaver Creek in Colorado, as well as several resorts in California and Utah. Last year Vail, along with neighboring Beaver Creek, hosted the FIS World Alpine Ski Championships. This was the third time the resort hosted the event. #9adventures #ski #board #race #skiracing #snow
Loveland Ski Area is actually made up of two different areas: Loveland Basin and Loveland Valley. The two were once connected by a chairlift - which still sits idly in the trees - but are served a bus that runs between the two. The lifts bring skiiers and riders up to an elevation of 12,697 feet, making it the second highest lift-served area in North America. What is now Loveland Basin first opened as a ski area in 1936 with a single, portable tow rope. The first chairlift opened in 1955. Loveland is regarded as the closest major ski area to the Denver metro area and often races Arapahoe Basin to be the first to open each season. #9adventures #snow #ski #board #snowboard #powder

Aspen Snowmass is made up of four different ski areas: Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, the Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. Snowmass is the largest, Aspen mountain the original. Aspen Highland is known for it's difficult and largely untouched terrain and Buttermilk is home to freestyle skiers and riders as well as beginners. The Aspen Skiing Company was established in 1946 and in the first year it opened it hosted three races. The resort gained notoriety in 1950 when Aspen Mountain hosted the United State's first world skiing competition. In 2002, Aspen hosted the ESPN Winter X Games for the first time and it has continued to be home to the event since. #9adventures #ski #ride #snow #xgames #race
One of the first areas for skiing in Colorado, what is now Winter Park was known as the West Portal in the 1920s. After construction of the Moffat railroad tunnel, ski trains began bringing winter sport enthusiasts from Denver to the western slope and the West Portal and its new ski jump and trails. In 1939 it was renamed Winter Park and a J-bar tow went into operation. Winter Park also owns and operates Ruby Hill Rail Yard, a small, free terrain park in Denver that is open through the winter. They have free rental equipment for children, host occasional events and contests, and even make supplemental snow. #9adventures #ski #board #ride #terrain #WinterPark #train

Telluride, like several other other Colorado ski towns such as Keystone and Breckenridge, started out at a mining town. In the 1950s the town started to decline, but by the early 1970s someone had the idea to rebuild by developing a ski area. The Telluride Ski Area opened in 1972 with five chair lifts and a lodge. The resort is also home to the highest-elevation restaurant in North America. Guests travel to Alpino Vino, located at 11,966 feet by enclosed snow-coach, for a one-of-a-kind Italian meal. #9adventures #snow #food #Telluride #ski #ride
Copper Mountain opened in 1972 and almost immediatly became a premiere ski racing destination. In 1976 the resort hosted the World, taking over for Heavenly Valley in California because it was low on snow. In 2011 it became an official U.S. Ski Team downhill training venue. The ski scenes in Dumb and Dumber were also filmed at the resort. #9adventures #CopperMountain #ski #board #snow #racing #race #movielocations

As more freestanding #emergency rooms are beginning to open around the state, emergency medical care is becoming more accessible and more confusing. Freestanding #ERs are generally affiliated with a #hospital, but not attached to one. These facilities can look a lot like a traditional #urgent care but generally cost a lot more. Because of this, it's important to distinguish between the two: which you need, and which you are heading to. Chris Vanderveen's investigation into freestanding ERs and their billing practices can be found at the link in our bio. #inside9 #9NEWSat10
8-year-old Carson Cline was recovering at the Children's #Hospital when he got a special visit from #Broncos wide receiver Cody Latimer. As they were taking pictures, Carson kept posing, crossing his arms. He told Latimer it was his #touchdown dance. Latimer promised if he got a touchdown in the next game he would do it. Sure enough, Latimer made his first #NFL touchdown - the game winning score against Chicago. And his first thought was of an 8-year-old in an Aurora #hospital. #inspiring #football #sports #inside9 #9NEWSat10
Crested Butte opened in 1960 and was the second resort in Colorado (after Vail) to open a gondola. However, their version, opened in 1963, was known being cramped and having collisions. It was eventually replaced by a chairlift in 1972. The resort is known for having both diverse and extreme terrain and therefore was one of the birthplaces of freeskiing.
In 1946, Arapahoe Basin opened to the public with a mid-mountain tow rope. Skiers would reach it by riding in an Army weapons carrier pulled by a four-wheel drive carrier. Chairlifts were finally installed in 1947 and were the first post-war chairs installed in the state. The A-frame lodge in the base area was also once a missile testing facility. A-Basin - as it's commonly known - has the highest skiable terrain and one of the longest seasons in North America. Their treeline terrain park is also the highest in the country. #9adventures #snow #ski #board #history #warhistory #army
